Sefrou, Morocco, old town
Story
Sefrou is the old garden town just south of Fès, set in the foothills of the Middle Atlas where the Oued Aggai drops through orchards and waterfalls. For centuries it was a meeting point of Muslim and Jewish communities — its annual Cherry Festival, dating back generations, was long co-organised by both — and the mellah, synagogues, and old houses remain in a medina quieter than Fès's. The town was known for its cherries, its honey, and its tailors, and some of that craft survives.
This is for the traveller who wants a gentle day-trip from Fès, or a base for the Middle Atlas. It is calm, green, and fading gracefully; come in June for the cherry harvest.
