Story
Fès is the oldest of the living medinas — nine thousand alleys where the call to prayer echoes off walls that pre-date the printing press, and tanners still work the pits as they did a thousand years ago. It holds Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and the oldest continuously operating university on Earth, and it does not perform for tourists. The labyrinth is the point: to be lost in Fès el-Bali is to be in the city correctly.
This is the spiritual and intellectual heart of Morocco, for the traveller who wants depth over ease. It is not for the heat-averse in high summer, nor for anyone who needs a grid. Hire a licensed local guide for one day — you will not find the tanneries alone, and you should not try.
