Story
Meknès is the imperial city that the crowds forgot — the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who built himself a Moroccan Versailles of monumental gates, twenty-five kilometres of walls, and vast granaries whose scale still staggers. Less visited than its sister Fès, it holds some of the grandest architecture in the country: the Bab el-Mansour gate, the Heri es-Souani granaries, and the mausoleum of the sultan himself. Moulay Ismail corresponded with Louis XIV as an equal, and meant it.
This is for the traveller who wants imperial grandeur at a walkable, unhurried pace — and the perfect base for Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, both minutes away. It is not the labyrinth Fès is; come for the scale and the gates.
