Meknès is the imperial city that the crowds forgot — the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who built himself a Moroccan Versailles of monumental gates, twenty-five kilometres of walls, and vast granaries whose scale still staggers.

Dar Jamaï deserves its own record rather than being folded into a generic Meknes medina walk. Built as a late-nineteenth-century residence and reopened as Morocco's National Museum of Music, the palace lets visitors study two forms of heritage at once: a Hispano-Moorish domestic interior and a collection organized around the country's many instrumental and vocal traditions.
