Morning in the beach of Martil
Story
Martil is the busy beach town at the mouth of the river that gives it its name, a short drive from Tétouan and the default summer escape for the whole northern region. In July and August its wide sandy stretch fills with Moroccan families on holiday, and the corniche lined with cafés, ice-cream stalls, and beach clubs runs at full volume. Out of season it empties and turns sleepy. It was once a Spanish port — a narrow-gauge railway linked it to Tétouan — and traces of that past remain in the old quarter.
This is for the summer beachgoer and the family traveller, not the solitude-seeker. Come in the shoulder months if you want the sand without the crowds.
