Story
Taounate is a provincial capital perched on the edge of the Rif, overlooking the Ouergha valley — one of the most fertile in Morocco, its red soil feeding wheat, olives, and figs. The town itself is modest and administrative, built on a spur with views across the valley to the mountains, and its weekly souk draws farmers from the surrounding hills. It carries the plainness of a regional centre in country that has long kept its own counsel, far from the tourist trail.
This is for the slow traveller tracing the inland Rif between Fès and Al Hoceima, the one curious about working provincial Morocco. It is quiet and unadorned; come for the views, the olives, and the unhurried souk.
