Story
Tafraoute sits in a circle of pink granite mountains in the Anti-Atlas — the name means "the hidden," and the town earns it. The Ameln Valley walls turn from pink to blood-red in twenty minutes at sunset, and in 1984 the Belgian artist Jean Vérame painted whole slopes of boulders with local help, a land-art gesture still standing and mildly argued about. This is Amazigh Chleuh heartland, where the welcome is the warmest and the quietest in the south, and argan forests cover the lower slopes. There is no way in without a car.
This is for the driver, the walker, and the traveller who wants the deep south without the desert cliché. It is not on any train line, and it asks for your own wheels.
