Story
Settat is the capital of the Chaouia-Ouardigha region, a provincial city on the highway between Casablanca and Marrakech. It grew around the old kasbah of the Glaoui, the southern pashas who once controlled the mountain roads, and the Ismailian kasbah on the hill still watches over the town. Beyond it, Settat is modern and working — a university, factories, and the grain trade of the surrounding plain — and it serves as the regional hub for the Chaouia's farms and the Ouardigha plateau to the south.
This is for the traveller breaking the long Casablanca–Marrakech road, or exploring the Chaouia inland. It is practical and unhurried; the kasbah on the hill is the reason to pause.
