Story
Figuig is the oasis at the kingdom's eastern edge — a cluster of seven ancient ksour, or fortified mud-brick villages, ringed by a hundred thousand date palms and pressed against the Algerian frontier. To reach it you cross hours of high plateau, and the palms arrive like a green answer to a question of dust. The springs that water the oasis have fed it for over a thousand years, the old irrigation canals still run beneath the palms, and the date harvest is the rhythm of the year. It is among the most isolated towns in Morocco, and the most rewarded by the itinerary.
This is for the traveller who wants the deep oasis, the ksar architecture, and a Morocco almost no outsider reaches. It is not easy; the road is long, and that is its protection.
