A sense of place
Al Attarine Madrasa is best understood through its threshold. The scholarly building stands beside the historic spice-and-perfume market, so scent, trade and ornament meet within a few paces. Inside, the compact courtyard concentrates carved plaster, cedar, tile and calligraphy at a scale that rewards slow looking; outside, the lane returns immediately to working commerce. That contrast gives an interpreter a specific story about education embedded in the economic life of medieval Fes. Visitor flow can be tight, and religious or conservation requirements may change which spaces are visible.
