Story
Targuist is a small town in the Rif mountains south of Al Hoceima, perched at altitude among forests and terraced fields. Founded under the French protectorate as a military post in the heart of a rebellious region, it carries the plainness of an administrative centre in country that has long governed itself. The weekly souk draws farmers and herders from the surrounding slopes, and the air, cold in winter, smells of cedar and woodsmoke. The mountains here are steep, green, and sparsely visited.
This is for the traveller exploring the central Rif beyond Al Hoceima's coast, the one who wants mountain Berber life at its most authentic. It is quiet and basic; come for the souk and the high country.
