Taourirt is a crossroads town of the Oriental — where the Fès–Oujda railway meets the road south toward the desert and the oases, and where the great Glaoui kasbah, a rammed-earth fortress of the southern lords, still stands in the old centre. It was once a caravan staging point; now it is a working market and rail town, its position the source of its consequence. The kasbah's walls hold the cool in summer and the memory of the trade that built them.
This is for the traveller breaking the long crossing between Fès and Oujda, or turning south toward Errachidia and the Tafilalet. It is not a polished destination; its gift is the crossroads and the kasbah that marks it.
