Larache city
Story
Larache is the Atlantic port where the Loukkos river meets the sea, and where Phoenician, Roman, Spanish, and Arab layers sit on top of one another a short drive apart. Just outside town stand the ruins of Lixus — a Phoenician settlement older than Carthage, its amphitheatre and fish-salting vats overlooking the river mouth where the Greeks placed the Gardens of the Hesperides. The Spanish held the town into the 1950s, and the medina still carries their arches and balconies. It is quieter than its neighbours, and cheaper.
This is for the traveller who likes history without a crowd, and a working Atlantic town rather than a polished one. Come for Lixus, the river, and the unhurried medina.
