Story
Laâyoune is the capital of the south — the largest city of Morocco's southern provinces, built along the Sakia el Hamra, the riverbed whose name means "the red canal" and that turns the surrounding land green when the rare water comes. It is an administrative and regional centre that has grown quickly, its avenues wide and its squares busy with families, markets, and the everyday commerce of a city that anchors a whole part of the kingdom.
This is for the overland traveller crossing south toward Dakhla, or the one who wants to understand the south as a lived place, not a line on a map. It is not a tourist spectacle; its dignity is in its ordinariness — a working city, growing, in a landscape most outsiders never reach.
