Story
Khemisset is the capital of the Zemmour region, set on the plateau between Rabat and the Middle Atlas, and it is the centre of the rural commune life and crafts of the Zemmour Berber tribes. The town is best known for its weekly souk — one of the largest in the region — where carpets, pottery, and basketry from the surrounding villages are traded alongside livestock and produce. A folk museum holds a good collection of Zemmour carpets and jewellery. It is a working town, modern in its centre, traditional at its edges.
This is for the traveller who wants a genuine tribal souk within reach of Rabat, or a base for the Zemmour country. Come on souk day; the carpets and the crowd are the reason.
