Immouzer — Immouzer des Marmoucha — is a high-mountain town in the Middle Atlas south of Fès, set among cedar forests, summer pastures, and the cold that comes with altitude. It was a retreat from the lowland heat long before the roads were paved, and the Berber tribes of the Marmoucha still bring their flocks to the high grazing each summer. A modest waterfall, the Cascades d'Immouzer, draws day-trippers in spring when the snowmelt runs, and the cedars around hold Barbary macaques and a deep, scented silence.
