Story
Climb the ramparts at the angle where the sea-wall meets the harbour mouth, and the Atlantic looks ready to walk straight into the town. Essaouira's UNESCO-listed medina is a grid of pale stone and blue shutters, built for trade winds and fishermen; the Sqala cannon battery and the gnawa rhythms drifting from doorways give it a salt-and-song character unlike anywhere inland. This is for the slow traveller, the sailor of mind, the one who wants Morocco with a wind-chill — the breeze here is famously relentless, so hold your hat. Between desert and ocean, Morocco keeps its easiest-breathing city, where the blue of the doors rhymes with the blue of the boats below.
