A sense of place

Villa Carl Ficke carries several Casablancas in one restored neo-Moorish building. Constructed for a German merchant, it later served as a detention center, children's home and school annex before becoming a museum devoted to the city's memory. That sequence makes the villa more than a decorative interior: it is a vehicle for discussing cosmopolitan commerce, colonial coercion, social use and heritage reuse without smoothing the difficult transitions. FNM also uses the site for temporary contemporary exhibitions and outdoor sculpture, which must be attached as dated programming. The permanent record should foreground the building's layered biography, restored Moroccan-European details and garden, with sensitive interpretation of its detention history.
