Story
Azemmour is a small Atlantic town on the Oum Er-Rbia river, its old medina enclosed within Portuguese ramparts and washed — like Chefchaouen — in painted walls, here of muted blue and ochre. For centuries a meeting point of Muslim and Jewish communities, it produced the great Moroccan Jewish mystic Rabbi Abraham Moul Niss, whose shrine draws pilgrims to this day. The medina is small, quiet, and increasingly adorned with murals by local artists, and the river beach stretches below the walls. It is gentler and far less visited than El Jadida, just up the coast.
This is for the traveller who wants a calm Atlantic medina, a river, and a shared Muslim-Jewish heritage in one short walk. Come for the murals, the shrine, and the slow afternoon.
